History of Sacred Heart Primary
Sacred Heart School has a long and proud history, deeply rooted in the Morwell community. Established in 1884, the school has been committed to delivering a high standard of Catholic education for well over a century. Originally founded to meet the educational and spiritual needs of local families, the school has grown and evolved alongside the town itself.
In 1933, Sacred Heart School moved to its current location, marking a significant milestone in its development. The school building has seen several changes over the years, including the addition of a second story in 1962, reflecting the ongoing growth of the student population and the school's dedication to providing an enriched learning environment.
A defining chapter in the school’s history began in 1907, when the Sisters of St. Joseph assumed responsibility for the administration and day-to-day running of the school. Known for their devotion to education and service, the Sisters brought with them a spirit of compassion, discipline, and commitment to faith-based learning. For over eighty years, until 1992, the Sisters of St. Joseph faithfully served the Morwell community through their leadership at Sacred Heart.
Their legacy is deeply woven into the fabric of the school. During their tenure, the Sisters played a pivotal role in shaping the values and academic foundations of countless students. Under their guidance, Sacred Heart became more than just a place of learning—it became a nurturing environment where children were encouraged to grow spiritually, intellectually, and morally.
Today, while the school is no longer administered by the Sisters, the values they instilled continue to guide its mission. Sacred Heart School remains committed to upholding the traditions of faith, service, and educational excellence that were so passionately upheld by the Sisters of St. Joseph for nearly a century.
